Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala yojana
What is the mission
The mission of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana is to provide clean cooking fuel (LPG) to rural and deprived households, reducing their dependence on traditional cooking methods like firewood, which are harmful to health and the environment. The scheme targeting the women from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families.
Key Services offered under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana:
- “PAHAL” – Pratyaksh Hanstantrit Labh (Direct Benefit Transfer for LPG – DBTL)
- The GOI gave subsidy to the customer on the purchase of the domestic cylinders of 14.2 KG and 5KG. Maximum of 12 cylinders per annum per PMUY-linked connection.
- Rs 1,600 per connection provided as a subsidy for new connections.
- Initial LPG refill and stove (hotplate) provided at no cost.
- Deposit-free connections granted by Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs).
- The scheme was mainly for the marginalised communities.
- Give-it-up’ subsidy campaign was also organized to complement the Yojana. Under it, LPG users who were able to afford to pay the market price for LPG were asked to voluntarily give up their part of the LPG subsidy. This campaign was launched in March 2015.
Why is the mission
This mission addresses the health hazards associated with indoor air pollution caused by the use of solid fuels for cooking. It aims to improve health outcomes, reduce the drudgery of women collecting firewood, and protect the environment.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India in collaboration with oil marketing companies (OMCs).
