M. N. Venkatachaliah
- M. N. Venkatachaliah (born on October 25th, 1929) graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Science and Bachelor’s degree in law from the University of Mysore.
- He began general practice of law in the year 1951. He was appointed Permanent Judge of the High Court of Karnataka in 1975, Judge of the Supreme Court of India in 1987, and Chief Justice of India in 1993.
- He was the 25th Chief Justice of India, serving from 1993 to 1994. M. N. Venkatachaliah was also the Chairman of National Human Rights commission from 1996-1998. In 2000, he headed the National Commission appointed for reviewing the Constitution.
- Though he has now retired, he has continued to work on anti-corruption and human rights issues, including support for the launch of the Initiatives of Change Centre for Governance in 2003. M. N. Venkatachaliah was awarded the prestigious Padma Vibhushan in 2004, the second (after the Bharat Ratna) highest civilian award in the Republic of India.
