D. R. Patil is Engineer by Education, Co-operator by Spirit and committed to rural development. He is an office bearer of many co-operative institutes from village to All India Level. D. R. Patil has four decades of vast experience in public service. He has started his political career as a member of Agricultural Produces Market Committee, Gadag from 1973 to till today. He is heading the Gadag APMC which is elected body of farmers’ continuously from 1975. He was also Dharwad Zilla Parishat member from 1987 to 1992. D. R. Patil has represented Gadag Constituency in Karnataka Legislative Assembly four times continuously. He has also rendered yeomen service in providing excellent education to the rural and poor students in north Karnataka region.He is an ardent follower of ‘Cyclonic Saint’ Swami Vivekananda and he has dedicated much of his time and energy for spreading the message of Swami Vivekananda. He was instrumental in establishment of Ramakrishna – Vivekananda Ashram at Gadag.D. R. Patil is committed to decentralization of political power, strengthening of Panchayat Raj System, empowering women and downtrodden masses. He is a strong advocate of social equality and exploitation free society.
