Skill Gap Study in selected districts of Karnataka

Skills gaps which is considered as one of the top five pressing concerns among both developed and developing countries directly impacts on improved productivity and employment in both formal and informal sector. It constraints the growth, innovation, real time disbursement of products and services, quality standards and other requirements of the country.

Skill gap in India has several shortcomings such as not meeting sector skill demand, lack of upgradation of skills and lack of competency in trainers. There is a need to enrich the soft skills inorder to enhance the employability. There is a huge gap between skill acquired and required in Karnataka when it aspiring to be a choice of destination for the skilled human capital. Unfortunately Karnataka has less proportion of skilled work force.

The evaluation study would assess skill gap and employability on the various parameters considering the demand and supply side components.

Project objectives:

  • To review the socio-economic profile of three districts covering demography, economic profile of district by industry, state of education and employment potential.
  • To identify development opportunities keeping in mind factor endowments and stake holders’ perspectives.
  • To identify the current and emerging skills 2020-25 and estimate the manpower requirement by industries and sector wise skill gaps existing in these districts.
  • To study the existing vocational training infrastructure and availability / non availability of TPs/TCs/quality trainers in districts both in public and private sectors.

Project Result / Accomplishments:

  • Harnessing Employment Potential: Automotive, BFSI, Core and Energy, Engineering and Manufacturing, Internet Business, Pharma and Healthcare, Software, Hardware and IT, Retail, and Logistics are expected to have incremental demand in 2021- 22
  • Gig Economy:The state should create a pool of workers with a background check and KSDC to become an eco-system enabler
  • W-A-S-H: Demand for water harvesters, sanitation specialists, wastewater treatment technicians
  • Healthcare & hospitality: Need for trained and qualified human resources to take care of the aging population, provide home nursing care, and work in the hospitality sector
  • Renewable Energy Sector: Important to create skilled human resources in solar energy harvesting and servicing, battery-operated vehicles – manufacturing and servicing
  • Sustainable Agriculture: Develop and promote training and certification programs to introduce young people to agriculture and the environment through Agri Tourism
  • Up-Skilling – RPL – Re-Skilling: In tandem with the Government of India, the state may initiate programs to ensure recognition of prior learning & through the Centre of Excellence at the district level
  • Emerging Sectors: Advanced manufacturing and 3D printing, advanced robotics and autonomous transport, Artificial intelligence, machine learning
