As part of my learning journey with Grassroots Research and Advocacy Movement(GRAAM) organisation, I had the enriching opportunity to visit Vidhan Soudha, the seat of Karnataka’s Legislature. This visit was not only a chance to see the grandeur of one of the most iconic buildings in India, and also a meaningful educational experience that gave me a deeper understanding of how democracy functions at the state level.
From the moment I entered the majestic building, I was struck by its architectural brilliance. The neo-Dravidian style, with its grand staircases, massive pillars, and intricate carvings, reflected not only Karnataka’s cultural heritage but also the dignity of the institution it houses.

During our visit, we had the privilege of observing the legislative proceedings. Witnessing the discussions and debates in both the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council was eye-opening. It was fascinating to see how elected representatives deliberate on policies, raise questions, and make decisions that shape the lives of millions. The experience gave me a firsthand understanding of parliamentary procedures, legislative etiquette, and the important role of opposition in a healthy democracy.
Interacting with officials also helped me appreciate the meticulous planning and coordination required to run such an institution smoothly. I gained insight into how laws are introduced, debated, amended, and passed. This was particularly inspiring for me as a law student, as it bridged the gap between the theoretical knowledge from textbooks and the practical functioning of governance.

My visit with the other fellows to Vidhan Soudha was not just an educational field trip; it was a moment of inspiration. Standing in a building where history has been made and policies are shaped every day filled me with pride and a sense of responsibility as a citizen. It reminded me of the importance of civic engagement, constitutional values, and the power of collective decision-making.
This visit was a memorable and enriching experience that deepened my respect for democratic institutions and their role in ensuring justice, equality, and development. I look forward to carrying these learnings forward in my academic and professional journey.
