In an era where career choices are expanding beyond conventional paths, the lack of clear career goals among youth remains a pressing concern. A study by GRAAM in Karnataka’s Ramanagara district revealed that over half of the students, both in and out of college, lacked defined career aspirations. This absence of direction not only hindered their participation in skill development programs but also impacted employment retention rates. Addressing this gap, GRAAM introduced the Aspiration Inspiration Motivation (AIM) program—a transformative initiative aimed at guiding students toward informed career choices and employment readiness.
Bridging the Gap
Career planning interventions have the greatest impact when introduced during adolescence. GRAAM’s evaluations of skill development programs, including Deen Dayal Upadhyaya–Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY) and Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), underscored the need for early career awareness. Findings indicated that students with well-defined career goals were more likely to complete training and secure long-term employment. However, a significant number of dropouts stemmed from a lack of interest or perceived irrelevance of available courses. AIM seeks to change this by fostering career clarity among students at the right age, ensuring they receive structured guidance tailored to their aspirations.
A Platform for Exploration and Growth
AIM is designed to support students in grades 9 to 12 in government schools at Mysuru, Karnataka. By equipping teachers with mentorship tools and career guidance strategies, AIM creates an environment where students can explore diverse career options, including unorthodox paths such as locomotive pilots, nutritionists, and more. Through sector-specific discussions, real-world exposure, and self-assessment exercises, students gain the confidence to align their skills and interests with realistic career pathways. Universalizing career guidance through programmes like AIM across all government schools and colleges is essential to ensure that every student, regardless of background, has access to informed career choices and a roadmap for their future.

- Inspiration Through Role Models: Students gained valuable insights and motivation through the screening of ‘My Country, My Pride’, a series of career guidance videos featuring accomplished professionals such as scientists, defense personnel, and police officers.
