School Polls and Student’s Political Engagement

BackToSchool As part of our Sugamya Shiksha program, the students took part in ‘School cabinet – an elected student body that plays a pivotal role in maintaining discipline and coordinating various non-academic activities in school.’ These school polls were conducted as per electoral system procedures laid down by Election Commission of India to make students familiar with democratic process and to experience the election process.

These school polls were conducted as per electoral system procedures laid down by Election Commission of India to make students familiar with democratic process  and to experience the election process.

Polling for school cabinet

As per electoral guidelines aspirant students filed their nomination and  went for  election campaigns in schools to get votes from other students. After the electoral process, teachers who are designated as election officers counted the votes and announced the election results.  Highest vote taker will lead the cabinet and different portfolios like  health minister, sports minister, education minister were assigned to other winning candidates.

Progress Review meetings

Sugamya Shiksha team organises cabinet meetings once in two  months and administration training has been scheduled for  once in three months. Ministers have to take care of execution of the action plan and progress of their work  will be reviewed during cabinet meetings. Student ministers have to record their day-to-day activities in a  dairy book. The team  will  assure guidance to solve the problems and expect  minimum 70 percent implementation of the programmes as mentioned in the action plan.

In total all these activities will  augment their political consciousness, democratic values, leadership skills, work culture  and questioning ability. This will transform  children from  `citizen in making’  to social agents who are in building strong democratic communities.

On 30th September’21 School cabinet was formed through an election process in the schools which came under the supervision of the Sugamya Shiksha programme.  Orientation and training has been imparted to the  elected members and an  Action plan has been shared among newly elected student representatives.
