Empowering Youth to Shape Sustainable Urban Futures

Empowering Youth to Shape Sustainable Urban Futures

When young minds engage with experienced administrators, the conversation about urban sustainability transforms from abstract policy into concrete action. At a recent Governance Talk held at Vidya Vikas Institute of Engineering and Technology, Mysuru, young enthusiasts gathered to explore pathways toward green governance and civic responsibility.

The session created a collaborative platform where students examined the evolving role of citizens in local administration. Dr. Basavaraju R Shreshta, Executive Director of GRAAM, emphasized that effective governance extends beyond official institutions. True progress relies on informed citizens who actively participate in their local communities. Building on this idea, Mr. Shaikh Tanveer Asif, IAS, highlighted how technology and public-private partnerships allow the youth to influence urban development and local economy directly. Adding an ecological perspective, Dr. C. G. Betsurmath focused on balancing city expansion with environmental protection, sparking conversations on plastic waste management and sustainable resource usage.

Rather than remaining passive listeners, students raised critical questions about plastic pollution, urban planning, and Mysuru’s sustainable expansion. The dialogue bridged the gap between policy design and youth-led action, providing participants with clear frameworks for community involvement.

Key Takeaways & Impact:

  • Civic Empowerment: Inspiring young citizens to take ownership of local sustainability challenges.
  • Knowledge Exchange: Connecting emerging youth leaders directly with experienced administrative decision-makers.
  • Actionable Sustainability: Equipping students with practical insights into waste management and green urban planning.
