GRAAM holds Stakeholders Consultation to understand Forest Rights

The team of GRAAM conducted stakeholders’ Consultation to understand the Scheduled Tribes community’s access to MGNREGA

Chamarajanagar: GRAAM as part of the study commissioned by the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes conducted a Stakeholder Consultation on the Forest Rights Act and NREGA inclusion at the District Administrative Complex, Chamarajanagar on May 17. 

The consultation was conducted on Forest Rights and NREGA inclusion, to understand the status of the communities in the Scheduled Tribe population in the pockets of Chamarajanagar district.d Since the community is identified as socially and economically backward by the Government of India, the population is in need of special protection against exploitation and social injustice. The stakeholder consultation was to understand the STs’ access to Community Forest Rights under Forest Rights Act and their participation in the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act.   

The discussion facilitated by Dr Basavaraju R Shreshta, Executive Director of GRAAM and Dr Rajendra Prasad, Head Community Consultation, GRAAM led to a rich learning experience derived from native intelligence. 

Under the study commissioned by NCST, GRAAM is pursuing to understand the implementation of Community Forest Rights and the working of the statutory bodies attached. An examination of the procedure adopted in settling the land rights and community rights claims under FRA 2006 will be conducted. GRAAM team also understands the proportion of acceptance and rejection of applications for CFR and also study the difficulties faced by the communities with regard to availability, storage, and disposal of small forest produce.
