Understanding how a state is governed often starts in a classroom, but seeing democracy at work firsthand changes everything. Recently, Youth Fellows participants from the Youth for Governance (Y4G) initiative stepped into the grand halls of Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru to witness the heart of Karnataka’s legislative proceedings.
Inside the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council halls, the students stood near the Speaker’s dais, where pivotal decisions are made. Facilitators walked them through the layout of the House, explaining the seating arrangements of elected members, ministers, and the Speaker. Beyond the physical space, the youth learned how debate actually unfolds how representatives raise public issues, deliberate on community needs, and vote on laws that shape daily life.
For these aspiring leaders, the visit bridged the gap between theoretical civics and real-world governance. Seeing where public policy takes shape demystified the legislative process and highlighted the crucial role citizens play in holding democratic institutions accountable. By connecting textbook concepts with live parliamentary procedures, the experience inspired the participants to view themselves not just as passive observers, but as active contributors to grassroots governance.
