What is the mission

The mission of Swachh Bharat Mission Urban (SBM-U) is to eliminate open defecation, improve solid waste management, and promote cleanliness and hygiene in urban areas of India.

The components of the Mission are:

  • Construction of Household toilets, including conversion of insanitary latrines into pour-flush latrines.
  • Construction of Community toilets,
  • Construction of Public toilets and urinals.
  • Solid waste management.
  • IEC & Public Awareness.
  • Capacity building. 

 

Why is the mission

The mission aims to address the public health and environmental challenges posed by inadequate sanitation, enhance the quality of life in urban areas, and contribute to sustainable development.

Who implements the mission

The mission is implemented by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) in collaboration with state governments, urban local bodies (ULBs), and other stakeholders.
