GRAAM to Map Policies and Programs on Non-Communicable Diseases in Indian

Through this study, GRAAM will map the landscape of NCD-related policy at the national and state levels and review and analyze the performance of NCD-related policies and programs.

A study has been commissioned by the World Health Organization (WHO) to GRAAM to study the policies and programs related to Non-Communicable Diseases. GRAAM tracked the targets and indicators that would shed light on the Non-Communicable Diseases-related health outcomes which may have been shaped by the various NCD-related policies and programs adopted over the years.

As reported by the India State-Level Disease Burden Initiative, the Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) from NCDs and injuries have together exceeded those from communicable diseases in every state of India, contributing 57–86% of the total DALYs among the Indian states in 2016. Therefore, there was a need for the country and its states to pay as much policy attention to NCDs as they do to communicable diseases and maternal and child health.

Through this study, GRAAM mapped the landscape of NCD-related policy at the national and state levels and reviewed and analyzed the performance of NCD-related policies and programs. The study also mapped the national policies, programs, and schemes pertaining to NCD control and management, NCD medicines and technologies, and financial protection schemes. To understand NCD-related health outcomes, their trends, and patterns over time in select states, a national-level study was undertaken. The team of GRAAM has submitted the report to WHO.
